Competition Readiness/Open Obedience

Wednesday 8:00PM

Requires a minimum of Basic Obedience training. Handler must have a good understanding of how to execute all Novice obedience commands. (Heel, halt, about turn, circle left/right, fast/slow, front, finish, stand your dog, and return to heel)  Dogs MUST have a sound Sit & Down STAY as well as a sound Recall.  Dogs with any aggressive or reactive tendencies must get prior permission from an instructor.


Dogs & handlers will learn the skills necessary to be ready to enter the obedience competition ring.  Focus will be on perfecting each exercise at the Beginner Novice, Novice levels.  There will be a strong focus on attention and heeling with engagement.  Those who are ready will begin working on the Open Obedience exercises.

  • Tug Toys (how to motivate your dog and use as a reward)
  • Proofing (making sure your dog understands an exercise)
  • Proper footwork
  • Fine tuning each exercise

  • How to fill out your AKC entry forms
  • Warming up your dog for entering the competition ring

  • Transitions
  • Dumbbell retrieves
  • Broad jump
  • Command Discrimination
