Breeds Owned, Trained, Loved:
Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, All American
"We think of ourselves as "experienced beginners", learning from our dogs on a daily basis. Our first dog to achieve a title - 20 years ago - spent a year in Sub-Novice Obedience class, reduced the breeder to tears of laughter over our expectations and established our dog library of how-to-fix-it books. Avery was a great dog and taught us to train, not complain."
Bob & Paulette believes every dog needs a "job" that fits them. Finding and developing that match strengthens the human-canine bond. Their experience with Therapy Dogs began only after one of their dogs succeeded at, but did not enjoy, other events. Rudy blossomed as a Therapy Dog for patients and staff alike and clearly showed that dogs are powerful, if non-traditional, healers.
Our Therapy Dog Orientation class tries to present the "reality" of Animal Assisted Activities: the expectations, preparation, challenges, rewards. Therapy Dog work is a team effort, far more than just holding a leash while talking with people. Many handlers present to evaluations - and beyond- without the foundations needed for success. We hope to change that.
